In the past 5 years, more than 1,600 high school girls from San Bernardino County have participated in the Young Women’s Health Conference. The young women who attend the conference reflect the rich diversity of San Bernardino County. Participants come from public and private high schools, alternative schools, and community-based organizations that work with young women.
Why a Day of Q and A?
At least 1 in 4 teenage girls in the United States has a sexually transmitted infection.
According to the CDC survey, more than 3.2 million teenage girls between the ages of 14 and 19 have a sexually transmitted infection. This overwhelming study is the first national study that focuses on this age group.
There’s more… San Bernardino County ranks in the top 10 (of 49) counties for having the highest teen pregnancy rates in the state.
Through the YWHC, young women gain knowledge and understanding that allows them to prevent unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections.
YWHC participants receive information intended to increase their awareness of the importance of living a healthy lifestyle. The conference is supervised by professional health educators with the support of community agencies, community colleges, and universities, which help connect the attendees to resources, especially for life after high school.
